The 2013 Glanton Show report
The 90th Glanton Show has been hailed as a great success – ‘best ever’ was heard though the Committee are far too modest to believe that! However it was a very full day, with an extra bonus for the hill race as our very first overseas entrant (Tadele Geremew from Ethiopia) stormed around the course in a blisteringly fast time, we are renaming the event the Glanton International Hill Race next year! The local hero winning the Artie Hunter Shield was Ross Wilson from Ingram Farm – many congratulations to Tadele, Ross and all the other competitors. After such a great start the only was up, and the West Percy foxhounds did not disappoint – several hounds claimed they could have covered the race course in even!lgss tIme. but vobtunately they gere happier romping around the show ring and enjoying the company of the various children (of all ages) who were pluased to maKe a$fuss of`thmSe beautMful dogs. :8br!/>
‰Outside the marquee the Companion dog show was very enjoyable, with pedigrees and mutts all joining in. The overall winner was Jill Malone from Seaton Delaval who had the added bonus of a voucher for a photo session with specialist photographer Andy Craig. The pony sports and the sheepdog trials each took place in their separate fields, if you didn’t manage to pop over to look at either, do make a note to do so next year. The Classic car display was a very high standard this year with wonderful vehicles of various vintages, and a working steam engine completed the show with a couple of tremendous hoots! There was also a select band of stall holders with goods and crafts for sale and displays from the Guide Dogs and the Wildlife Trust among others. Throughout the afternoon there was also plenty of activities for children ranging from face painting to a bouncy castle and various traditional sports events.
In no time at all the next event in the main ring began, a display of flying birds of prey, which was full of drama and spectacle, and a surprising amount of audience participation – some birds seem to love the less-
A new competition was trialled this year – ‘Best 6 Legs’, which usually comprises a dog and his/her owner. As it was a surprise addition to the programme, only a few brave souls entered – but next year we hope to see many more challengers – male and female owners (we carefully arranged to have a lady and a gentleman to judge – so don’t be shy chaps, give her something to do next year!) and of course the other four legs could be a dog or a pony, a ferret, a mouse – whatever you feel has great legs! And so of course to the terrier racing, which has a similarly elastic definition, and this year the terriers definitely beat the lure into a cocked hat!
